This exhibit seeks to analyze the affect of black female music on feminist identity. The majority of this exhibit is focused on myself, and how this music has affected my life and my experience and coming-of-age as a black feminist women.

To understand the impact that this music has had on my life, you must first understand my background. I grew up in Milford, Ohio, a suburban city right outside of Cincinnati. As a young black girl, I had mainly white friends, so I struggled a lot with my image. This music was a way for me to be proud of being black, because for so long I wanted so bad to be just like all my other white friends. Through this music I was able to celebrate my difference and it has been essential to my thoughts on feminism and my place within it.

Through the analysis of black female music from the early 1960s to the present, I hope to exemplify the ways in which black female music can influence and cultivate feminist identity. I will use myself and my experiences as a case study to further analyze this.
