Putting It All Together
From an outsider perspective, these two concepts may seem completely different. You may be asking yourself, “why spend so much time looking at these two spaces?” The Speech & Hearing Clinic, almost ready for another anniversary, and the Sexuality Education Studies Center, still waiting to open its doors for the first time, of course, are different. But understanding and contemplating how these spaces have/will have an impact on the students of Miami and the Oxford community is meaningful. Both spaces have a purpose and want nothing more than to learn and to help others. As always, we often forget in this crazy world, we must take a moment to look back on the past to understand what we are doing in the present and for the future. History tells us not only how to avoid certain mistakes, but to appreciate those who made mistakes and those with impressive accomplishments.
Furthermore, this critical look at history and culture allows us to contemplate the role of women, the meaning of gender in society, the voices of younger generations from a different angle, and other areas of thought as well. Although my research focused on spaces specific to Oxford, Ohio, one can still us this analysis to critique and dissect other cultures, spaces, and professions. For me, that type of critical thinking and cultural consideration is a reason for receiving a quality education.
*Lastly, I do have to say that what was created through this exhibit is based on my interpretation from my studies, research, and identity.
