Cigarettes: traditional gender roles? 

In the 70s, women continued to be objectified and sexualized. However, the Virginia Slims ad attempts to either criticize or enforce traditional gender roles. At first glance, the ad appears sexist, showcasing a female churning butter. However, the further you read, the company addresses the progress that women have experienced. The company criticizes gender roles to market a product to women. Although traditional roles were questioned, the emphasis on appearance is still prevalent by using a beautiful woman placed front and center in the ad.
